Thurs 1st Dec – more work on the mean

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To solve a variety of mean problems

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to solve mean problems

STARTER:

Question 1

5 numbers have a mean of 16, a different set of 6 numbers has a mean of 12. What is the mean of all 11 numbers?

Question 2

10 people have a mean weight of 95 kgs. An 11th person joins the group. He weights 115 kgs, what is now the mean weight of all 11 people

LESSON: Use above examples to explore solving mean problems.

Have a go at exercise 4 on your question sheet

EXTENSION: Work through section 66 questions

PLENARY: Check answers, look at a couple of exam pro questions, get some feedback on their confidence

Mon Nov 28th – Revision of Mean, Median, Mode and Range

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: To ensure students understand the terms mean, median, mode and range

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will be able to find the mean, median, mode and range of data in exam type questions

STARTER: Write down a definition of the four terms: Maths Dictionary, Maths Dictionary

Range

LESSON: Quick reminder of how to work out each of the different term. Try and emphasise the fact that they are all mathematical averages but give different measures of middleness

Work Through these questions (Section 65 then Section 66)

Have Answers Available for students to double check their work

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: to decide on topics to cover by attempting to answers some past exam papers

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will know what areas of weakness to work on over the next few months

STARTER: Bodmas Song

LESSON: Use copies of 2009 Paper 3H (Non Calculator Paper 1). Mark Scheme

Let students work through exam questions for 30/35 mins. Support whilst working

PLENARY: . Go through answers with them, try and engage in dialogue and make notes (use lesson blog comments!) on any topics that will need further work.

Monday Nov 21st – Linear Maths – What Topics to focus on?

LEARNING OBJECTIVE: to decide on topics to cover by attempting to answers some past exam papers

SUCCESS CRITERIA: You will know what areas of weakness to work on over the next few months

STARTER: The Circle Song, Range, Mean, Median and Mode SOng

LESSON: Hand out copies of 2001 Paper 3H (Non Calculator Paper 1). Hand out Topic list for whole course

Give students 10 mins to have a go at first five questions. Support whilst working.

PLENARY: Look at answers to questions with students – take note of any weaknesses (use lesson blog comments!)

Repeat above procedure as many time as possible in lesson.
